Search for Common Ground Indonesia is implementing a 24-month project under the global SOIC Phase II project with the U.S. Department of State Global Engagement Center (GEC) to reduce the influence of violent extremist narratives among internet users - particularly youth - in Indonesia, as a response to growing intolerance and unchallenged hate speech online in recent years. ISIS and other violent extremist (VE) organizations continue to recruit heavily, using transmedia messaging at multiple levels, spreading a violent ideology, building support, and encouraging acts of terror. Despite the changing VE landscape, efforts to counter the messaging of these groups will remain important to decreasing support to, and recruitment into these groups. Evidence-based global efforts suggest that supporting locally credible messengers plays a key role in reducing the appeal of VE messages and providing at-risk individuals with viable alternatives.
