Position Summary

Search for Common Ground implements more than 20 peacebuilding and conflict transformation programs throughout Central and Southern Africa. From working with journalists and government officials in Central African Republic to stop the spread of hate speech, engaging security forces and civilians in the Democratic Republic of Congo to rebuild trust and restore human security, to facilitating engagement between mining companies and local communities in Madagascar, our programs help to create a space where  actors from across dividing lines can work collaboratively to address conflicts and reduce violence. Search’s Central and Southern Africa (CSA) portfolio includes Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Madagascar. The CSA Program intern will support the team in providing programmatic and logistical support to Search’s projects in the region. For more information on our projects in CSA, please visit www.sfcg.org/africa.

The internship begins in January and typically lasts until April or May.

The position is based in New York City. 

Key Responsibilities

The roles and responsibilities include:

  • Copy editing French and English-language donor reports for clarity and precision;
  • Assisting with the tracking of key compliance indicators;
  • Providing support in collecting data from field teams around the use of CGA tools to establish country-level programming needs;
  • Conducting research and analysis as appropriate;
  • Assisting with knowledge management tasks (e.g. maintaining consultant databases or working on contract management); and
  • Performing administrative support duties, including visa applications, travel arrangements and payment requests. 

As internship descriptions cannot be exhaustive, the position holder may be required to undertake other duties that are broadly in line with the above key responsibilities.

Qualifications

You meet the following qualifications:

Essential:

      • Strong writing, editing and communication skills (required)
      • A self-starting, detail-oriented and flexible approach to tasks (required)
      • Demonstrable interest in the CSA region and/or conflict resolution (required)
      • Ability to handle multiple tasks and tight deadlines (required) 
      • Excellent attention to detail (required)
      • Ability to read French (required)

      Desirable: 

      • Fluency or advanced proficiency in French
      • Degree in relevant subject 
      • Interest and knowledge of conflict resolution 
      • Experience working at a non-governmental organization/non-profit or similar environment
      • International experience

      Undergraduates (juniors and seniors), graduate students, and recent graduates are welcome to apply.

      Salary: This internship is unpaid. School credits can be arranged for students with their institution. For international applicants, Search is not responsible for providing student or work visas; you will need to make your own visa arrangements.

      Hours: This position requires a commitment of no less than twenty hours a week.
